CULLMAN, Ala. — One of Alabama's most beloved springtime traditions returns April 24 and 25, 2026. The Alabama Strawberry Festival — an official state sanctioned event — brings two days of free live music, locally grown strawberries, arts and crafts, family entertainment, and the unmistakable flavors of the season to Depot Park in Cullman. Admission is free and the event is open to all.

The festival is produced by Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism, the team behind two of Alabama's other signature seasonal events — Cullman Oktoberfest and Cullman Christkindlmarkt. The 2026 edition features an expanded music lineup across two stages, a massively grown Kids Zone, over 100 unique vendors, strawberry-inspired contests, and the fan-favorite Doggie Pawgeant.

A Lineup Built for the Main Stage

Country artist Ernest leads the 2026 headliner roster on the Coca-Cola Main Stage, joined by rising star Dylan Marlowe — two names that have spent recent years building passionate, sold-out followings across the country. Rounding out the top of the bill are Lauren Watkins and Owen Riegling, both making their mark on country radio and beyond.

All 18 acts perform across two stages over the two-day run — and admission remains completely free.

Partnership with Cullman Football Academy Expands Competitive Opportunities for Local Youth

CULLMAN, Ala. — OmniSports Academy (OSA), a program of Cullman Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism (CPRST), has announced the launch of its Rec+ Flag Football League, a new competitive tier within its established recreational program that will give Cullman’s top young athletes the opportunity to compete at the regional and state level for the first time.

The Rec+ model builds on the success of Cullman’s popular Recreational Flag Football program by identifying top players from each age division who wish to extend their season and represent Cullman in the Alabama Youth Football League (AYFL) against teams from across North Alabama.

As part of the initiative, OmniSports Academy is partnering with Cullman Football Academy (CFA) — one of the region’s most respected full-contact youth football organizations — to field a Rec+ OSA Flag Team and further strengthen Cullman’s youth football pipeline.

“Our flag football program has experienced incredible growth, and with that growth came a natural demand for the next level of competition,” said Nathan Anderson, Executive Director of CPRST. “Our athletics team, led by Ashley Morton, launched the Rec+ initiative, allowing us to build on the fun, accessible environment our recreational league provides while giving players who want more competition the chance to represent Cullman on a regional and state stage.”

“Every player will still participate in the recreational league they were drafted into, and the Rec+ team will be selected from that group to train together and compete in additional AYFL events. What makes this opportunity especially meaningful is the collaboration with Cullman Football Academy, a program that has long set the standard for youth football development

in our community and has helped prepare generations of young athletes for middle school and high school football.”

“Flag football is opening the door for more kids to fall in love with the game,” said David Brown, longtime organizer with Cullman Football Academy. “Not every child starts with full-contact football, but flag football builds the skills, confidence, and passion that can lead them there. Having our programs working together creates a natural pathway for young athletes

and ultimately strengthens football throughout our community.”

The program has also received strong support from Cullman High School Head Football Coach Trent Walker, who sees the collaboration as an important step in continuing the tradition of football excellence in Cullman.

What David Brown and Cullman Football Academy have built over the years is something this community can beincredibly proud of — their program has developed outstanding young athletes and prepared players who eventually come through Cullman High School. According to Anderson, the Rec+ program reflects CPRST’s broader mission to expand opportunities for youth athletics while strengthening collaboration across Cullman’s football community.

Spring is just around the corner, and that means it's time to sign up your young athletes for baseball, softball, and t-ball with Cullman Parks, Recreation, and Sports Tourism. Our comprehensive youth baseball and softball programs are designed to accommodate children at various skill and age levels. The Cullman Active Adult Center was abuzz with celebration today as two of its cherished members, Sherry Boatright and Barbara Whitehead, were inducted into the Alabama Senior Citizen's Hall of Fame. The intimate ceremony, held at their hometown activity center, honored their remarkable contributions to the community with heartfelt speeches, cake, and joyous festivities.

Honoring Sherry Boatright

Sherry Boatright, a beloved resident of Hanceville, Alabama, has been a beacon of inspiration at the Cullman Active Adult Center for over 18 years. As a dedicated dance instructor, she has enriched the lives of 25-30 senior citizens weekly through her classes. Her dance troupe, "The Kickers," is well-known for their spirited performances at local events, including the "Kicking Cancer in Cullman" fundraiser, which Sherry founded as a breast cancer survivor. The group also brings joy to nursing home residents with their lively performances.

Reflecting on her induction, Sherry expressed, “To be selected along with the group of people that were also in this group was so overwhelming. I feel undeserving, but I am very grateful and I love what I do.”

Celebrating Barbara Whitehead

Barbara Whitehead, a dedicated volunteer from Cullman, has devoted over 30 years to serving older adults. Her passion for music led her to offer lessons to seniors, culminating in a weekly jam session at the Donald E. Green Active Adult Center. This gathering has become a cherished tradition, fostering community among over 100 seniors. Barbara also volunteers as a DJ for fundraising events and shares her musical talents at local nursing homes. Since 2005, she has been a pianist at Harvest Temple Church and Andrews Chapel Church.

Barbara humbly shared her feelings about the honor, stating, “I love people and I love doing what I do. I’m a nobody and the fact that I have people who want to listen to me is unreal. The goal was not an award, I’m just doing what I love. I don’t feel deserving, but I’m very honored.”

Cullman City Council Approves Purchase of Historic Church for Future Community Theatre

In a significant move to enhance the cultural and performing arts landscape of Cullman, the City Council has approved the purchase of the historic First United Pentecostal Church building, located at the corner of 3rd Ave NE and Clark St NE, behind City Hall. This 6,000-square-foot building, with its beautiful A-frame 40' tall sanctuary, will serve as the future home for the Community Theatre as well as a venue for other civic and performing arts gatherings.

This multi-use sports complex, renowned for its inclusivity and ability to provide athletes of all abilities with a competitive and fun environment, has undergone a transformative resurfacing project to enhance the experience for Miracle League Baseball athletes and all users.

The Field of Miracles, a pioneering complex in the country to integrate a miracle field with regular-use softball fields within the same park, has been a cornerstone of the community since its inception. The original field was constructed through the collective efforts of over 300 individuals and businesses, embodying the spirit of unity and generosity that defines Cullman. The recent resurfacing project, fully funded by the past year's fundraising efforts led by the Cullman Parks and Recreation Foundation, signifies a renewed commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive park experience.

The grand re-opening event was further enlivened by the participation of the Wallace State Baseball Team and Cullman High School baseball team, who played alongside Miracle League athletes, adding to the excitement and joy of the occasion. Additionally, the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association, represented by Barry Dean, presented a check for an additional $2,000 to the CPRST Miracle League, underscoring the widespread support for this invaluable community asset.

Miracle League player, Whitley Miller (pictured below) shared running the bases is her favorite thing about Miracle League Baseball. For Whitley and other players, running the bases is now much safer with the new turf installed, providing a non-slick surface while also remaining soft on contact.

From its initial construction to today's unveiling of the new astroturf surface, this project showcases the best of Cullman - our unity, generosity, and unwavering commitment to inclusivity. CPRST Holds New Cullman Civic Center Groundbreaking Event

Cullman, Alabama, November 9, 2023—The City of Cullman, Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Department, CCR Architecture, and Jim Cooper Construction Company held a groundbreaking ceremony at the new location of the Cullman Civic center, slated to open its doors late January 2025.

The new civic center will be located in the middle of the Sports and Events District near Cullman’s newest attraction, WildWater.

On over 140 acres, the 115,000 square feet sports and events facility has a large space for recreational events, a catering kitchen, breakout meeting rooms and plenty of parking. The gymnasium will be able to hold large events, such as concerts, expos, conventions, sporting events, and more. It will hold up to 6,500 people with the ability for numerous configurations to meet event space needs.

Nathan Anderson, Cullman’s Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism Executive Director explains, “Today’s groundbreaking event is not just about marking a milestone in a project, we are celebrating the community. We are excited that together we are making this dream a reality.”

CCR Architecture is the architecture firm responsible for design and Jim Cooper Construction Company is the general contractor.

Bearing the Fruit of an International Bond: The tale of two sister cities

An undeniable sense of heritage and tradition can be felt within the city of Cullman - whether by first-time visitors or lifelong citizens. It is a legacy 145 years in the making. Cullman’s Germanic roots run deep with strides being continuously taken by city officials to ensure that Colonel John G. Cullmann’s vision for “Die Deutsche Kolonie Von Nord Alabama” (The German Colony of North Alabama) is maintained and its roots continue to dig deeper.

One of the most influential steps in ensuring that Cullman would continue to keep true to its roots was establishing and cementing an international Sister City relationship with the birthplace of Colonel John G. Cullman - the beautiful Riesling wine village of Frankweiler, German, nestled in the region of Rheinland-Pfalz. The exact village from where Colonel Cullmann drew his inspiration when creating his vision for the newly established German refugee colony.

So, how does a Sister City relationship of international proportions come about and why does a relationship of this type hold such a large weight of importance for a city like Cullman?

It took close to a decade to come to fruition; however, the wheels began to turn a century after cullmanoktoberfestival.com | 27 Cullman’s establishment. Throughout the initial planning of Cullman’s centennial birthday in 1973, citizens and local officials looked to the city’s founding legacy for inspiration in celebrating the German town’s one hundredth birthday. The Cullman Friends of Frankweiler Facebook page describes this celebration as when the seeds were planted for a relationship with Col. Cullmann’s hometown.

It is told by members of Cullman Friends of Frankweiler that at that time in 1973, Hans Krause - representative of Lufthansa Airline of Germany - presented Cullman’s Mayor, W.J. Nesmith, with a book compiled by the airline containing information about John Cullmann and included greetings from the Burgermeister of Frankweiler. By 1975, the seeds that were planted just two years prior were beginning to bear fruit, and later that year Cullman saw the visit of five visitors from Frankweiler - including past Burgermeister Friedrich Fliehmann, that year’s current Burgermeister Theodor Pfaffmann and members of their families. Their visit centered around the dedication of the Colonel Cullmann house - home of the Cullman County Museum. Visits from officials of Frankweiler continued in 1985 when John Cullmann’s great-great granddaughter, Ellen van der Linden of Konigstein, Germany, was located and invited to join distant relatives local to Cullman for a formal meeting.

Not long after these initial visits, Gunter Stiess - Burgermeister of Frankeweiler at the time - extended an invitation to Cullman Mayor Jack Sides to attend a special ceremony in John Cullmann’s birthplace of Frankweiler. The ceremony was created to honor Colonel Cullmann’s contribution as the City of Cullman’s founder. In May of 1987, a delegation of 19 Cullman citizens, led by Mayor Jack Sides and his wife, Ruth, attended the celebration marking a permanent partnership between the two cities. During the twinning ceremony, Cullman Mayor Jack Sides and Frankweiler Burgermeister Gunter Stiess made a toast with a glass of Frankweiler wine signifying that Cullman and Frankweiler were Sister Cities.

The following year saw a group of 47 visitors from Frankweiler to Cullman - thus beginning a tradition of exchanging visits between the Sister Cities every two years. Members of the local group, Cullman Friends of Frankweiler, relish in this special relationship and the fond memories that come from the experience. They truly believe that the strong bond between Cullman and Frankweiler started with these initial trips taken by citizens of the two cities and only continues to strengthen through the years. The Cullman Friends of Frankweiler group meets quarterly and continues to plan trips and ceremonies alongside the Frankweiler, Germany group.

Those looking to learn more about the twinning ceremony between Cullman and Frankweiler are encouraged to visit the Cullman County Museum where photos and relics of John Cullmann’s family, as well as the ancestral Cullmann home in Frankweiler, Germany, are all on display. Located on the mantle within the replica of John Cullmann’s home is the exact wine goblet used during the twinning ceremony that declared Cullman and Frankweiler as Sister Cities. A photo of Cullman Mayor Jack Sides and Frankweiler Burgermeister Gunter Sti ess at the ceremony memorializes the celebration alongside the goblet. The Cullman Friends of Frankweiler group is also an excellent resource for learning more about the Sister City relationship and how one can become involved in the continued relationship between Cullman and Frankweiler.

Pomp & Circumstance: A short story about our 1949 Strawberry Festival Princess.

What do the phrases, “City of Churches,” “Sleepy Little German Town,” or “Biggest Poultry Producer of the South,” all have in common? Each of those are descriptions of our hometown - and you can add one more, “Strawberry Capital of the South.” At one time the delicate little berry produced in early spring was a big deal around here. I mean A Big Deal! Similar to the automotive parts manufacturing of today, strawberries were the cash crop of Cullman, Alabama and beyond. And so were the spin off industries that surrounded the mighty strawberry. And, well, who doesn’t like strawberries? The uses of which would rival those that Bubba quoted about shrimp in that beloved movie we all know and love - Forrest Gump - from jams and preserves to pies, cakes and rolls.

And how did we celebrate such a wonderful and prosperous commodity in those days? We had a multi-day festival that was the highest of pomp and circumstance - including cutting a rug at the local dance, a parade, and of course the crowning of the Strawberry Festival Royal Court - and we have continued many of these treasured traditions through the years. Our town and its people get to have bragging rights for the longest-running Strawberry Festival in Alabama and the chance to share another part of our history to anyone lucky enough to listen. The story that follows is of the early years of celebration and one young lady who was given the ultimate title of “Strawberry Princess.”

In the 1940s, the choosing of the Royal Court was slightly different than it is today. Cullman County and City schools would pick their princesses nominated by the principals and teachers, then would be voted on by the senior class. In the year 1949, Norine Buckelew was chosen by her West Point High School class to represent them as their Strawberry Princess. Norine was escorted by Frank Fink, Jr., who was attending college at the time. The King and Queen of the festival were chosen by local officials and businessmen. The West Point Princess, Norine, recalls participating in many local activities during the weeks around the festival and having a good excuse to miss class. One outing included hanging out with other Princesses and their families at the Governor’s Mansion during Big Jim Folsom’s time in office. These appearances were some of Norine’s favorite highlights of the festival as well as the dance and the parade.

In those days, it was a very big deal for the “R.F.D. America” radio game show to be broadcast nationwide from Cullman during the 1949 Strawberry Festival. As quoted from a local paper pulled from Norine’s scrapbook, “When the Farm Champion of Cullman County is selected on April 30, the spotlight of the nation will be on Cullman County. All of this publicity should help make the ninth annual strawberry festival the best and most interesting festival the county has ever had.” Norine was proud to have been a part of such a famous event - and rightfully so!

We should continue to be proud of Cullman’s agricultural heritage - the days of pomp and circumstance and Strawberry Festival Royalty. These are the moments that put Cullman, Alabama on the map as an agriculture legacy. Ask someone if they know about Cullman and its rich history of Strawberry Festivals and celebrations. If they don’t, enlighten them. They will be glad you did, especially during the month of May.

Get to Know Cullman's Oktoberfest

On October 12, 1810, the royal family of Bavaria invited the citizens of Munich to a five-day public celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, with festivities including a parade and horse races. A year later, the city repeated the celebration, adding an agricultural fair, and Oktoberfest was born. In 1818, the festival grew again with the addition of carnival booths. Over the years, other cities began to copy Munich's idea and Oktoberfest became a worldwide celebration of German heritage, not to mention a fair excuse to down a little beer and sausage.

Enter Cullman, Alabama

When Bavarian John Cullmann established the settlement that bears his name in 1873, he invited his German countrymen to join him, and they did. As late as 1899, a visitor noted, "A stay in Cullman is the next thing to a trip to Germany. Everything is foreign."

By the late 1890's, Cullman was holding an annual "German Day" in June, marking the anniversary of the incorporation of the town; some sources also claim that a German Day was held in the fall. Whenever occurring, it was a one-day event featuring a parade, speeches, and an evening ball. The celebration lasted at least through 1915, when a note in a Winston County paper said that Cullman's German Day had been held on June 10, adding with a touch of humor that President Woodrow Wilson (who had just taken a hard stand against Germany in the wake of the sinking of the Lusitania) had not been invited to the party. German Day seems to have faded away as Cullman made its way farther into the 20th century.

Over the years, Cullman became progressively less German in its culture, taking more pride in its growing reputation as a progressive city. In 1939, the town adopted a new annual celebration that focused not on culture but agriculture: The Strawberry Festival.

Then came Cullman's centennial in the 1970's. Growing interest in the area's German heritage led to the 1976 opening of the Cullman County Museum in a reconstruction of Col. Cullmann's home, an event attended by the mayor of Frankweiler, Germany, John Cullmann's hometown. In this atmosphere, an encounter with the Bavarian celebration was inevitable.

Enter Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church was established in 1877, only four years after the settlement and three years after the incorporation of Cullman. In 1977, the church celebrated its first hundred years in the wake of the city's centennial while interest in all things German was still running high.

The one-day celebration held in June of that year, was tabled a "German festival" and featured an array of German foods (and American specialties like hamburgers for those with simpler tastes), banners decorating the city streets, a poster contest for children at Sacred Heart School, and Oktoberfest-style booths with carnival games. The event was successful enough to bear repeating and became an annual fundraiser for the school.

In 1982, the Cullman Downtown Merchants Association joined with Sacred Heart to create a weeklong fall celebration that culminated in the school's fundraising event. In that year, the "German Festival" became Oktoberfest, with one small difference from its Bavarian counterpart.

There was no beer.

Dry Oktoberfest?

It's true. In Cullman's early days, the city and the county had their fill of beer, wine, and liquor. The city had saloons and brewers with their own recipes. To the north, Vinemont got its name from its wine-producing vineyards, and John Cullmann himself organized the Wine Company of Cullman. The area was known especially for its sweet wines.

All that changed in the 1930's when, led by cultural shifts and Baptist ministers, citizens voted Cullman County dry. In 1982, the city's first official Oktoberfest featured the tapping of the ROOT beer barrel, a tradition that continues to this day. Along the way, Cullmanites would also sip "Octoberzest," a custom-brewed non-alcoholic apple cider. Some think that the dry celebration may have been the only official Oktoberfest in the world with no beer; carnival games, festivities, Miss Oktoberfest, wiener dog races, car shows and more, but no beer.

Cullman's was a small celebration, and many felt that the lack of beer was holding back both the event and the city. Cullman's dry status has been said to have negativity affected decisions to locate businesses and industries to the area, and rumors even circulated that Mercedes chose Tuscaloosa over Cullman for its Alabama auto plant because Tuscaloosa had alcohol.

Prost! (That's "Cheers!" in German)

Alcohol aficionados made several unsuccessful attempts at a wet Cullman over the years until November 2010, when voters passed a conservative measure to bring in alcohol on a basis somewhat more limited than many places. So Cullman would see restaurants with bars, but not bars without restaurants. And on October 5, 2011, Cullman would see real beer flow from the tap of Oktoberfest.

Since the first wet Oktoberfest, the event has lived up to pro-beer predictions, in recent years drawing crowds of over 10,000 for the big Saturday that closes the event.

Why is the hay wearing lederhosen?

A couple of Cullman's more visible Oktoberfest features are the pairs of giant hay people located downtown and at Depot Park. In 1999, Philip and Pat Clemmons traveled to Germany and saw similar decorations at Oktoberfest celebrations there, so they returned with the idea and set to work on making the tradition a Cullman reality. In 2000, using hay from their own farm and help from friends and family, they set up hay couples at locations around town. Pat Clemmons also supplied the mums that were displayed all over Cullman around Oktoberfest. The Clemmons' children, helped by others, continued the tradition after the couple died in a plane crash in 2008.

Cullman honored the memory of Pat and Philip Clemmons by declaring them the 2008 Burgermeister. Their children carried out their duties.

Oktoberfest today

Today's Oktoberfest is one of the biggest annual events in Cullman, featuring live traditional and contemporary music, Miss Oktoberfest contest, farmers' market, craft show, historical walking tours, wiener dog races and pet costume contest, children's activities, car show, 5k and 10k runs, food vendors and yes, a biergarten. Several local churches also put on German dinners and other activities during the week.

A King's Legacy

Close your eyes and pretend you're back in the year 1950.

Gas was 27 cents a gallon; a new car would cost you around $1,500; and the average family income was around $3,300. Everything went at a slower pace than it does now, and cell phones weren't attached to our hands.

Now, flash back to present day. You're on a Zoom call while Netflix streams on your television and your phone plays music. You see more cars than crops when you drive down the road, and you can scroll through everyone's lives in a matter of minutes.

For William Peinhardt, 1950 feels like yesterday, and it was a year he will never forget.

As we sat on a Zoom call, he and his daughter commented on how bizarre it was that we were discussing the year 1950 while on a virtual interview in two separate cities. He said his 23-year-old self could have never imagined sitting in 2021 talking about the Cullman County Strawberry Festival on a screen.

"Meeting over a computer didn't exist then, and everything was a lot slower-paced," Peinhardt said.

He is 94 years old now, and the year he reigned as Strawberry Festival King is a distant memory.

Peinhardt is the last living Strawberry Festival King and was the last one ever crowned at the 10th annual event. He grew up in Cullman and helped the family business of produce.

"The whole town came together to celebrate, " said Peinhardt. "It was nice getting to meet all the people in the city of Cullman and see all the friendly faces at the big parade and the Strawberry Ball held at St. Bernard School. We all really just had a great time."

While being the king of the city that year and graduating from Auburn University with a degree in agricultural engineering were major highlights of his life, he said there was nothing more special than being married to his wife Dorothea for fifty-nine years before she passed away in 2010.

"My greatest accomplishment in life was helping Dorothea rear our six children all those years," he reminisced.

"It's interesting to know he grew up farming & shipping strawberries & then became a king. My dad was a king!"

As the world continues to grow, change, and move faster than ever, Peinhardt and his family hold on to the memories of a time when picking strawberries was a way of life and being part of a parade was much more thrilling than watching one on a screen.

This time of year, we all want to be healthier, and one wonderful way to do this is by eating big, colorful salads! With farmers markets in full swing, this is the perfect chance to grab fresh ingredients to bring your salads up a notch while also shopping locally!

Salad recipes are best when local produce is in its prime, and local produce is seasonal; fruits and vegetables can be interchangeable depending on availability and personal taste! Plant-based salads are great as a starter, or they can be converted to a crowd-pleasing entrée with the addition of steak, grilled chicken, or pork!

Whether you're trying to eat better, trying to add more plant-based meals to your diet, or are just looking for new ideas, you'll find some great options below! Check out one of our favorite healthy salad recipes for the spring and summer!

The Best Spring Salad

For this one, you're going to be using some fresh ingredients from the garden as well as making your own dressing!

Here's what you're going to need:

Lettuce: one bunch of green or red leaf lettuce will do the trick!
Strawberries: spring and summer are the perfect time for fresh strawberries, and you can even pick some up at the 2021 Cullman Strawberry Festival on Saturday, May 1, 2021!
Goat Cheese: this may be a new one for you, but you won't be disappointed!
Onion: we're going to go with a red onion for this salad, but feel free to use your favorite!
Almonds: this is going to be mostly for texture, so feel free to leave them out or use more depending on your preference; pecans are also a great alternative!

We're also going to be making a yummy vinaigrette dressing to go with this one, and the ingredients for it include balsamic vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, Dijon mustard, Herbs de Provence, salt, and pepper.

Ingredients

For the Salad:

1 bunch of green or red leaf lettuce
12 strawberries, hulled & quartered
4 ounces of goat cheese, crumbled
½ red onion, thinly sliced
¼ cup of toasted sliced almonds

For the Dressing:

¼ cup of balsamic vinegar
½ cup of extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
½ teaspoon of Herbs de Provence
Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

Add chopped lettuce, quartered strawberries, sliced red onion, sliced almonds, and crumbled goat cheese to a large bowl.
Combine olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, Herbs de Provence, salt, and pepper to a bowl; whisk until combined and taste for seasoning.
Pour half of the dressing over salad ingredients; toss with tongs to combine.
Add remaining dressing to salad when served.
Enjoy!

Exercising at home or on-the-go may not be ideal; however, when you are in need of a workout or just looking to get started, here are a few exercises that can be done with a chair or park bench!

Tricep Dips: Hand placement should be about shoulder-width apart; keeping elbows parallel, lower your body to the floor and press back up. Start with three sets of fifteen repetitions!
Push-Ups: Hand placement should be about shoulder-width apart. Bend elbows and lower body toward the chair, and drop the body down to a comfortably challenging position. Start with three sets of fifteen repetitions.
Chair Squats: Begin by standing in front of the chair with feet parallel and hip-width apart. Bend your knees and lower your body as if you were going to sit down. When you feel your glutes make contact with the chair, come back to a standing position. Start with three sets of twenty-five repetitions.
Reverse Lunges or Bulgarian Split Lunge: Use the back of the chair or bench for balance. Take a step backward with your right foot and lower your body to the ground. Be sure to keep the forward-facing knee in line with the toes; the front and back leg should form approximately 90° angles. Start with three sets of twenty-five repetitions, alternating right and left leg for each repetition.
Plank: Place hands on the chair or bench, directly underneath your shoulders. Keep your lower back in a neutral position by engaging the glutes and abdominals. Bring your heels off the ground, and balance on your toes and the ball of your foot. Hold this position for 30-60 seconds at a time, and repeat three times.

Basics for Making a Raised Bed Garden

Do you want to garden this spring but don't think that a typical garden is for you? A raised bed garden may be a great choice! A raised bed garden offers benefits to all types of gardeners, and they're super easy to build!

The first thing you'll need to do is gather your supplies. Here's what you're going to need:

Two 2x12 planks, each 8 feet long
Two 2x12 planks, each 4 feet long
Twelve pieces of rebar, each 2 feet long
Rubber mallet
Newspaper or cardboard
Soil to fill the finished frame

After you've collected your supplies, you'll want to position your boards; do this by laying them down on a level section of ground with their inner corners touching. Stand one long board on its side and hammer two pieces of rebar 1 foot from each corner with the rubber mallet, a few inches deep into the ground.

Next, use a piece of rebar at the center of each plank for temporary support while you prop up the short sides: prop up the second long side and adjust the alignment of your frame as necessary. Hammer rebar a few inches deep 1 foot from each corner of the second long side.

After propping up the sides, you'll want to add more support. Do this by hammering rebar a few inches deep 1 foot from each corner of the short sides and remove the temporary supports. Then, add two pieces of rebar 2 feet apart along each long side; these will reinforce the frame when it's filled with soul. Finally, hammer in the rebar until only 6-10 inches show above the ground.

Once the frame is built, you'll want to line the bottom with either newspaper or cardboard and wet it thoroughly. The last step will be to fill your bed with soil to within a few inches of the top.

Raised bed gardens have an endless amount of possibilities, and they're a fantastic way to gardening in smaller areas or where you don't want to mess up the ground!

Garden Spot of the World: The History of Strawberries in Cullman

The birth of Cullman began with a siren’s song from founder Johann G. Cullmann to recruit farmers to his burgeoning city, calling it the “garden spot of the world.” He advertised cheap land, a fertile climate and fresh opportunity. Thankfully the call worked - and within just a few years farmers put down roots in Cullman and set to work figuring out what would grow best in this little pocket of North Alabama.

It didn’t take long to find one: strawberries. Local history shows the Kessler family was one of the first to introduce and plant strawberries, bringing down plants from Kentucky. Not long after the Kessler’s first few crops came to bear, other families such as the Rambows, Grobs, Evers and Goellers started experimenting with strawberries.

The local Hauk Ice House made it possible to ship Cullman strawberries by train as far as Cincinnati, Ohio, with a fresh crop loaded to the vented tops of freight cars, alongside ice to keep them fresh and cool for the trek.

As far back as 1898, The Cullman Tribune newspaper was reporting on local farmers shifting from more common cash crops to focus on strawberries, with harvest shipping out across the southeast. The price for a crate of strawberries back in those days? Just $1.25, with the farmer clearing just over 50 percent profit.

The paper went on to ask the question of 19th century Cullmanites: “What better profit can anyone desire than this, and why do people plant cotton and corn when berries pay so much better?”

Plenty of locals continued to heed the call, and by the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, strawberries had become one of the key crops in the area and quickly became Cullman’s agricultural calling card. Buoyed by an unique sweetness due to the rich soil and temperature climate in Cullman, the local exports became a known commodity for their flavor. It was around that

time local farmers also leveraged their collective power to organize a growers’ association, which helped solidify Cullman’s place in the market.

Before long, local farmers and merchants set out to celebrate those red berries, with local records showing a Strawberry Jubilee and Spring Carnival dating all the way back to 1905. Billed as “the biggest week in the history of Cullman” at the time, the festivities included everything from a contest for the best decorated carriage to a queen’s contest pageant.

The more modern version of the Strawberry Festival, some longtime residents might remember kicked off in 1939 with a crowd of around 25,000 enjoying live music, strawberry-themed exhibits and even a grand ball. Within a few years, the event was one of the premiere agricultural festivals in the region, drawing attendees from across the country - with local officials even converting the city’s 150-foot water tower into a gigantic, illuminated strawberry making for one of the most impressive spectacles of the era.

The strawberry market, as well as the festival’s influence, waned in the early 1950s and the event eventually went on hiatus, but Cullman strawberries have remained a key piece of the local agricultural landscape. The Strawberry Festival made a much-hyped return in recent years, featuring live music, vendors - and of course - plenty of local strawberries to go around.
